It was March last year when PS5 designer Mark Cerny gave us some insight into “the next evolution of PSSR,” set to hit PS5 Pro consoles in 2026, and now, it looks like the so-called PSSR 2.0 is ready to be launched in the first quarter of the year. That’s according to recent rumors, which also aim to provide a closer look at the expected performance of next-gen PSSR.
For those that don’t know, PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is an AI-powered upscaling technology exclusive to the PlayStation 5 Pro, which debuted with the flagship console in November 2024. Pro console owners have long been waiting for the upgrade promised by Mark Cerny last year, which is set offer FSR 4-like upscaling.
PSSR 2.0 is rumored to arrive between January and March
Funnily enough, AMD has already moved on from FSR 4, now rebranding to FSR Redstone, which comes with a set of machine learning-powered features: FSR Upscaling, FSR Frame Generation, FSR Ray Regeneration, and FSR Radiance Caching. Most of those are now launched, though we’re still waiting for Radiance Caching to arrive sometime this year.
Summary of rumors for the “PSSR 2.0” major update, finally coming to PS5 Pro:
- Update timing is around January to March
- Implementation of a feature very similar to FSR4 on PS5 Pro
- Improved image quality and performance compared to before
- Frame rates boosted even for games that were capped at 70-80fps
- Low-resolution classic games also upscaled to high resolution
- New debugging tools prepared for developers

Rumors last month seem to rule out Frame Generation implementation directly into PSSR 2, though it should be noted that frame gen support is already possible on the PlayStation 5 via support for FSR 3 Frame Generation in select titles.

Although Sony has yet to confirm any release date outside of the generic ‘2026’ just yet, we look forward to hearing more about PSSR 2 in the near future, assuming these rumors are to be believed. That hopefully means another one of Mark Cerny’s presentations to enjoy, which are always a joy to watch and listen to.
