Another case of a connector burning out on NVIDIA graphics cards. This time, the problem concerns MSI’s secure cable, the one with the yellow-tinted pins. As a reminder, with this custom 12V-2×6, the brand was hoping to avoid connection errors that could lead to the plug heating up and going up in smoke. Clearly, even when properly connected, this solution does not prevent the connector from burning out.
12V-2×6: MSI’s connector also goes up in smoke!
In a nutshell, we have a Korean user who, during a gaming session, saw his PC produce a blue screen. He immediately checked his connector and it turned out to be burnt. However, his card was correctly powered, we’re talking about a 1300W SuperFlower block in ATX 3.1, all connected via the MSI adapter.
In any case, according to him, his RTX 5090 Suprim was not fully loaded on Black Desert Online, as the card consumed ‘only’ 400W. Remember that this model can consume up to 600W. In fact, the card consumes almost the limit allowed by this connector.
In any case, while the MSI connector prevents connection errors by means of a visual indicator, it doesn’t prevent the connector from burning out, and the proof is in the pudding. In fact, as you can see, only the top row of pins has blackened. It should also be noted that the problem occurred after two hours of play.
Even if the damage doesn ‘t look as impressive as we’ve seen, it’s still interesting to know whether or not the card has been damaged. Let’s hope for his sake that his card is still functional. Remember that the RTX 5090 Suprim is a top-of-the-range version from MSI, and that in France it sells for around €4,000!
